Kojonup Working
In 1999 the Kojonup community contracted First Steps to research, develop and implement a pilot employment and training model, that was uniquely adapted to the needs in small rural communities. A local community consultation in 2002 recommended the project be expanded to include a range of activities to compliment the employment and training focus. These included Business Enterprise, a Learning Resource Centre, Regional Network, Youth Mentoring and Rural Career Development. The Rio Tinto WA Future Fund supported the project to become sustainable and Kojonup Working now operates with input from the local school, businesses and the Kojonup branch of the Country Women’s Association. |
Youth and community engagement
Kojonup District High School and the Local Community Partnerships (LCP) contracted First Steps at the end of 2007 to collate and report on a Parent/Community Satisfaction Survey designed to identify gaps in the education provided for students attending the school. Strategies to address any gaps would be discussed by the School Council for implementation during 2008 and would be available for the LCP to build links with the community and assist youth in other small rural communities as part of their strategic direction. |

The Working Communities Regional Network project commenced in 2004 as a result of the regional research and development activities of the Kojonup Working project. The network allows community groups to share their innovative projects with each other as well as businesses and other organisations servicing rural areas. The group completed a Communications and Sustainability Plan to enable them to participate in policy making that addresses the challenges faced by regional communities. |
Southern Agcare
| Southern Agcare is a professional counselling and community support service for rural people in the Southern Regions of Western Australia. In 2007 the voluntary management committee wrote their three year Strategic Plan. As a part of their strategic direction, First Steps was contracted to work with the organization to build their capacity and position them to be robust and sustainable into the future. |
